Amenorrhea Amenorrhea is defined as the absence of a menstrual cycle in women. There are two types of amenorrhea, primary and secondary. Primary Amenorrhea is diagnosed as a girl who has not yet started menstruation by age sixteen.

Secondary Amenorrhea is diagnosed as women who have previously had their menstrual period, but have stopped menstruating for three or more consecutive months. In order to classify as amenorrhea, the stopping of menstruation cannot be due to birth control pills, pregnancy, breast feeding, or menopause.

There are numerous causes of amenorrhea. The treatment type that is going to be used to treat a particular case is based on the type of amenorrhea that the person has and the cause of the condition. Different medications may be used to allow a woman to begin menstruation. Oral contraceptives may be prescribed to begin menstruation, and dopamine agonists can be effective in restoring normal endocrine function and ovulation in women with hyperproclactinemina.

When the cause is estrogen deficiency, hormone replacement therapy may be helpful. Lifestyle changes may be recommended if amenorrhea stems from a psychiatric disorder. Surgery may be necessary if the following types of tumors or abnormalities occur: pituitary tumors, hypothalamic tumors, or genital tract abnormalities.

Luckily there is an alternative option available to treat this disease, acupuncture!

acupuncture for amenorrhea Acupuncture is an ancient and wonderful practice originating from traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture has been found to be very effective in preliminary trials and studies of its use in the treatment of amenorrhea. A common belief among acupuncturists is that the symptoms of amenorrhea are related to the energies of the liver, spleen and kidney. Treatments will often be focused in those particular areas.

Acupuncture is used to improve hormonal imbalances that are created as a result of this condition. Once hormonal balance is established, the body is now able to stimulate the ovulation process. Once ovulation has begun, menstruation is now able to occur.

This balance will allow conception to occur.

Acupuncture treatment for amenorrhea helps increase the flow of energy, also known as chi, to areas where there is a lack of or decrease of energy based upon disease. It also helps to unclog blockages in different acupuncture points. A large focus is on acupuncture points relating to and concentrating on the spleen, kidney, liver and reproductive organs. This will ensure proper energy and blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Studies have shown a marked improvement in ovulation among women who received acupuncture as a treatment for this condition. Acupuncturists will work with patients to determine the best course of action to treat their particular type of amenorrhea. Acupuncture can provide a healthy alternative to traditional medicine in the treatment of amenorrhea.
