Fallopian tube blockage is a major cause of female infertility. Blocked fallopian tubes are unable to let the ovum and the sperm converge, thus making fertilization impossible. Fallopian Tubes are also known as oviducts, uterine tubes, and salpinges.
About 20% of female infertility can be attributed to tubal causes. Most commonly a tube may be obstructed due to infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The Fallopian tubes may also be occluded or disabled by endometritis, infections after childbirth and intra-abdominal infections including appendicitis and peritonitis. The formation of adhesions may not necessarily block a fallopian tube, but render it dysfunctional by distorting or separating it from the ovary.
In most situations today, in vitro fertilization is used to overcome tubal infertility as it is more cost-effective, less invasive, and results are immediate. With IVF, after stimulation of ovarian follicles, egg cells are removed via a sonographic directed vaginal puncture into the ovary, these eggs are fertilized outside the body, and the resultant embryo placed transcervically into the uterus; – the tubes are bypassed in this process.
Acupuncture Treatment for Fallopian Tube Blockage – Acupuncture treatment may also be helpful in fallopian tube blockage. A Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis is applied to find and treat the root cause of the blockage. In Chinese Medicine a fallopian tube blockage can be caused by several factors:
- Liver Qi Stagnation – When the body’s Qi or Vital Energy is not flowing smoothly this can cause localised issues
as seen in the case of fallopian tube blockage. - Kidney Deficiency – According to TCM the Kidneys govern reproductive function and store the Essence (sperm, folicles, eggs). When there are issues with Kidney Qi this can often lead to difficulty in getting pregnant.
- Damp Heat – Damp Heat is an excessive accumulation of Dampness combined with Heat affecting the Lower Jiao (Lower Torso) of the body. In cases of fallopian tube blockage due to Damp Heat there may be accompanying symptoms such as pain and yellow vaginal discharge or burning urination.
- Blood Stasis – A severe form of Qi Stagnation, Blood Stasis is almost always results in pain in the affected area
and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal masses.
After a thorough diagnosis is performed an appropriate acupuncture point prescription would be chosen to treat the blocked fallopian tubes. Treatment frequency and duration may vary depending on the underlying cause and the overall health and constitution of the patient.
